9 Notes on Being The Boss
You don’t need to be in business or have a staff to be a leader. You have the opportunity every day to lead in your own life. This actually starts in your personal life! How you manage yourself determines how effectively you will manage others in all aspects of living.
No bossiness required! Effective management is example management. How do you show up? Where are you making a mark? What energy are you contributing to your team?
Your family is a team. The people who help you to effectively run your household such as cleaning crews, nannies, babysitters, landscapers, etc. are all part of an extended team. Where you are able to share the job load of running your home runs parallel to loosening the reins on “control” in your business as well. No one does it alone.
There is no one right way. Being open to new points of view, to shifting course, to experimentation, allows for a free flow of ideas. Creativity can only breed in an open forum.
There is no such thing as balance. At least not in its traditional definition. Balancing work and home life is an illusion because it leads you to believe that you are in effect balancing and managing two different things. You are ONE person. You are your work and your home life combined. The problem is that you are hardwired to thinking that you need to be balancing two completely different things instead of one. Essentially, you manage you and that includes all aspects of you. See…look how much easier it just became to balance your life! Fluidity allows for subtle shifts in creating synergy between all the components of your life. How to create fluidity? Remain open to change, not as something to step away from but something to move in toward. Fear it less and balance it more.
The business of you begins with your own care and feeding! What are you feeding your body? What are you feeding your mind and your soul? Is it enriched and enriching? Every living thing requires nurturing. Our pets, our plants, the grass in our yards. Where are you taking control of the nurturing of you? This is not the job of your friends to provide, or your employees to hand in, or your spouse to sign on for. This is a job that belongs to you alone. Will you lead yourself forward toward that which you most need and require? How exquisite will you feel once you do?
Curate the legacy. Your legacy. Not the one you leave behind, but the one you get to choose and build upon every day in real time…today. How do you want to be remembered? Then do that. What do you want to not regret not doing? Then do that. Where do you most want connection? Connect that. Take action on your own story.
Define success. Then live that. Everyone has a different definition and that definition shifts over the decades of our lives. It is important to define and redefine because how can you know or understand if you are successful if you are living someone else’s definition of it and maybe not your own? Lead from a place of success…whatever that means to you.
Be a visionary. Visions create. Possibility. Renewal. Acceptance. Understanding. Empathy. Ease up on yourself in order to make room for what’s next and in order to celebrate owning the process of leading and along with that the very real probability of growth and evolution. After all…celebrating growth-- your own and that of those around you-- is the true measure of leadership that is energized, objective, and memorable. This is your power tool. Use it well!
