Is It Cancelled?
You’ve been at it for several weeks now. We all have. New Year’s resolutions and promises recorded and started in January may be losing momentum and even hitting the trash by February. Why do we start what we don’t finish? Why is it so hard to stick to a plan?
Consulting with a client this week on this very topic, she expressed a high level of disappointment in herself for losing interest in something she thought would have so much meaning to her. She was frustrated that she planned to make time for doing the footwork and research on starting a business she had been thinking about for awhile. Yet, she has done nothing in 2017 in the first 6 weeks of the year to take that dream into the real world. Every time she began the task of Google searches and calls, she just stopped. This goal was a monster. She admitted that she was afraid that she would fail if she started. So what did she do instead? Never begin.
You might argue that we are only 6 weeks into 2017 and that she has the balance of the year still ahead to own up to planning and building out her business. You would be right…except for one thing. She was so afraid of failing that she was failing. The task was simply too large. She was manifesting exactly what she did not want to happen.
So…were her resolutions, her dreams, and her promises to herself now cancelled and aborted? How many of us can relate to having this happen at some point in time? Quickly and without warning we confuse overthinking with starting something, and our individual goals get mixed up with our ability to measure our growth and evolution.
Before you click delete on your bucket list of goals here are 3 things you can do now to stay in the game of success:
Lighten the load. Pick one task per week that you CAN accomplish that will move you a tiny bit further on the timeline of that specific goal. In order to do so, forget about the end result. Focus instead on connecting bits and pieces of success in the smaller tasks you begin and complete one week at a time. This puts you in the moment and concentrates your efforts on growth not goals.
Edit. Yep…you are the writer in the story of your life. If something no longer feels right to you…even after only a few weeks…alter it. Shape and reshape your vision so that it reflects and manifests what you DO want to happen and not what you don’t want or cannot achieve. Think of this as a U-Turn on the road of life. You have a choice and you can choose to change your original plan. Note however that changing a plan is quite different than cancelling it!
Embrace not knowing. Scary. Yes, AND necessary in order for you to move ahead. I love the saying “Say yes now and figure it out later.” As people we just naturally tend to say no…to overthink…to want to control. I would have cancelled ½ my life over the past few years if I had waited to know. If you are seeking change then you must also be seeking the unknown. If transformation is your end game, then you simply must just do. Which means you must just be. Which means that you are required to experiment and date the possibilities.
